Gewurztraminer…and San Fran

Gavertstawhater???  That is exactly what I thought when we made our first stop on our Sonoma Valley Winery experience. I am not a wine kinda girl so I was excited to become a little more familiar with wines. Todd and I took a great vacation to San Francisco and Sonoma while the kids were spending time with the grandparents at the farm.


We spent 3 great days in San Francisco at the Chancellor Hotel in Union Square and then traveled to Sonoma to spend two days tasting new wines and of course visiting some breweries on the way.

During our stay in San Fran we went on two different food tours. I know…1 food tour would be good but we decided on 2!!! EVEN BETTER!!  The first tour took us through a part of San Francisco called Hayes Valley. It’s an up and coming area that had some boutique type shops and all different cultural establishments. One of my favorite stops on was Smittten Ice Cream.  This place was built out of a cargo container and used liquid nitrogen to freeze your ice cream right in front of you. I got to try the olive oil ice cream with lavender short bread cookie pieces mixed in 🙂 It was muy excellente!! They take the raw ingredients and it freezes in about a minute right in front of you. The taste is very fresh and you could taste all the distinct flavors. Smitten Ice Cream


Our 2nd food tour was in the evening and took us to the mission district. This tour was pretty unique because it included insights  about murals that were done throughout the area. One interesting note is that the murals were basically done to help prevent graffiti on the buildings.  This tour had lots of great places including this place called Hog & Rocks. It paired ham and oysters. YUM!!!!


After a great time in San Fran and visiting Alcatraz, Coit Tower, the Painted Ladies, cable car museum, Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Southern Pacific Brewing, and City Beer Store it was time to head to Sonoma. We drove over the Golden Gate Bridge and stopped at Muir Woods. This is a breath taking place with unbelievable sights of redwood trees. Another highlight of our vacation.




We traveled more north and hit up a couple breweries on our way that included Moylan’s and Lagunitas. If we had more time we would have like to spend it at Lagunitas. They have this awesome patio and of course, great beers. Even better, we can get some of them in Texas.  They give a pretty extensive brewery tour and are certainly generous with their samplings. 🙂

We finally reached our destination at the Sonoma Creek Inn and quickly ventured out to the town square. And what an adorable place it is. I was a little nervous at first because I thought these people would be complete wine snobs but to my surprise they were genuinely nice and happy to tell us all about wines.  Todd and I planned our tour of wineries on our own and tried to pick some places that were less “traveled”. Looking for places that didn’t have tour buses or anything with a huge parking lot. We packed a picnic lunch to bring with us  hoping to find a perfect place. We headed off to find an adventure since neither one new what we were doing or where we were going.


Needless to say, we are awesome! We discovered 5 great places and some spectacular wines. This is where I discovered Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Franc and many others. I am much more a white wine girl vs red wine and have an affinity for things that bubble. 🙂 We enjoyed a bottle of Viogneir from Kunde  Family Estate Winery with our picnic lunch.




We ended our time at Russian River Brewery, famous for Pliney the Elder. Todd was in beer heaven. We had such a great time and made so many memories. Can’t wait to come back!!!




Week of Dinners July 15th

So we are back at it again with the swim lessons this week. And again I am trying to plan some  really simple, easy, and fast recipes for the week. I usually try to keep things simple any ways because we are always busy, if its not swimming it’s homework, reading, laundry.. you name it.

Last week the dinners went pretty well. All the recipes worked out great. I especially love using my crock pot so dinner is practically done when we get home. This week is no exception. I am making up a recipe so I will let you know how it tastes. ImageThe bruschetta grilled chicken was very tasty, I liked how the grill gave the tomatoes and basil a smokey flavor.

On Friday night I didn’t feel like cooking and it was just 3 of us so we had a “pick” night. As in… you can pick out whatever you want to eat. Also known as FFY -fend for yourself- in my childhood years. I just moved the lasagna to Saturday night and it was super yummy but I added way too many zucchini and the kids proceeded to pick some out.

Oh! I was able to get a few days of extra activity in. And super excited that I wasn’t sore after my weights class. 🙂 I’ll try again this week on increasing my purposeful exercise.

Tuesday: Grilled Cheeseburger Wraps made with ground turkey breast for a leaner meat.

Wednesday: Vegetarian Yellow Curry

Thursday: “Pick” Night

Friday: Beach Dinner -Grilled Salmon and Sausage- Disney’s Teen Beach Movie Premier 🙂 If anyone has kids and has EVER had it on Disney channel this summer you know what I’m talking about….!!! I love Disney made for TV movies! 🙂

Saturday: Date Night

Week of Dinners

This week and next week will be out of our ordinary routine.  When do we ever reeaalllly have a routine these days though.  But especially out of the ordinary these next two weeks the kids have swim lessons right  after work so my dinner plans had to be pretty simple and quick.  Here is a breakdown of the week in dinners. This week does include a couple meatless meals for Brent. I’m trying to accomodate his preference of less meat which is so hard because I am most definitely a meat eater. 🙂

Monday: Pineapple Verde Chicken with quinoa and green salad.
Tuesday: Bean Burritos and cantaloupe
Wednesday: Grilled Chicken Bruschetta with lemony orzo and asparagus
Thursday: Tuna Sandwiches
Friday: Skillet Lasagna
Saturday: Wingin’ It

I hope to start back with some actual purposeful workouts. I plan to do a little bit of cardio during the swim lessons but we will see if that holds true too because last night Brent begged me to sit and watch the whole time 🙂 PLUS, my legs still hurt after my bodypump class on Saturday. You would think that the delayed muscle soreness couldn’t hang on this long. I only missed 3 weeks of lifting weights, but I guess that will do it. Ugh! #gottagetbackontrack
