Fact or Fiction Friday 6-15-12
If you skip breakfast you will lose weight.
The Fact: You will most likely take in more calories throughout the rest of the day to make up for what you didn’t eat in the morning. One study showed participants who skipped breakfast in both childhood and adulthood had a larger waist circumference, higher fasting insulin, higher total cholesterol, and higher LDL cholesterol levels than did those who ate breakfast. Another recent study linked men that skip breakfast to an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
Don’t let excuses get in the way of eating a health breakfast.
- If you’re not hungry in the morning, start with something small like a piece of whole grain toast and low fat string cheese. Eat a mid-morning snack later like a small piece of fruit
- If you don’t have enough time in the morning, make sure your kitchen and pantry have quick foods like yogurt, fruit, whole grain breakfast cereals or instant oatmeal.
As cliche as it sounds, Breakfast is a very important part of a balanced diet. Breakfasts make people happy. I know I am happy when I eat breakfast. Just look at that happy cereal. You’re smiling already.
